Itinerary

Your Lower Salmon River rafting adventure begins with a riverside orientation, where your guides will cover safety, river etiquette, and what to expect over the next few days. Once your gear is loaded and secured, you’ll push off into the sparkling waters of the Salmon River and ease right into the rhythm of river life.

The first miles through Green Canyon offer fun, rolling rapids — the perfect introduction to the excitement ahead Midday, your guides will prepare a delicious riverside lunch on a sandy beach—perfect for relaxing, taking a swim, or trying your luck fishing for smallmouth bass in the clear, warm water.

By late afternoon (around 4:00 p.m. “river time”), your camp will be waiting on another beautiful stretch of beach. Your tent will be set upsleeping pad inflated, and your personal gear ready for you. Take a dip in the river, build sandcastles with the kids, or unwind in the shade while your guides prepare appetizers. As the sun dips behind the canyon walls, you’ll gather for a gourmet riverside dinner, followed by laughter, stargazing, and the peaceful sounds of the Salmon River at night.

Wake to the smell of fresh coffee and the sound of the river. Your guides have an early spread ready with coffee, tea, cocoa, and fresh fruit before a hearty breakfast served around 8:00am. Take a little time to fish, play a quick beach game, or simply enjoy the morning light on the canyon walls as camp is packed and loaded for another day on the water.

The day’s float takes you deeper into the rugged beauty of Cougar and Snow Hole Canyons. Along the way, your guides share stories of the early homesteaders, the Nez Perce people, and the dramatic geology that carved this incredible landscape. Keep your eyes open for soaring eagles, playful otters, and bighorn sheep scaling the cliffs.

Then the action ramps up—Snow Hole Canyon delivers some of the Lower Salmon’s most exciting whitewater, with splashy, fun rapids like Lorna’s Lulu, Bunghole, the Gobbler, and Bodacious Bounce. Between rapids, there’s time for a quick swim, a friendly water fight, or casting a line for feisty smallmouth bass in the calm pools.

By late afternoon, you’ll pull into one of the canyon’s largest sandy beaches. Your camp is ready and waiting—tents set, shade up, and appetizers on the way. Evening brings camp games like bocce, volleyball, or a few of MRO’s own river favorites. After dinner, relax by the campfire as your guides share stories and maybe a bit of stargazing—an unforgettable night beneath Idaho’s vast wilderness sky.

As the sun climbs over the canyon walls, the river beckons for one last unforgettable day. After another delicious riverside breakfast, we’ll push off and head into Blue Canyon—a stunning stretch where the water carves through dark, indigo-hued volcanic rock that gives this section its name.

This is where the Lower Salmon River reveals its wild heart. The pace quickens as you float through a series of exhilarating rapids, including Devil’s Slide, Sluice Box, and Eye of the Needle—each a highlight in its own right. Between the action, calm pools offer the chance to swim a gentle rapid, float alongside your raft, or cast one more line for smallmouth bass in the sunlit eddies.

As the canyon opens up, take in the sweeping views of Idaho’s remote backcountry—towering cliffs, sculpted basalt formations, and the warm glow that makes this stretch of river so special. Wildlife is often out in force here, from ospreys and eagles soaring overhead to river otters playing along the shore.

By afternoon, the river begins to slow as it approaches the confluence of the Salmon and Snake Rivers, one of the most awe-inspiring sights in the Northwest. From here, you’ll board a jet boat for a thrilling 22-mile ride up Hells Canyon, the deepest canyon in North America—a fitting and spectacular finale to your Lower Salmon River adventure.

Back in Riggins, you’ll find yourself already dreaming of your next trip down the Salmon, the “River of No Return.”

Your river adventure concludes in spectacular fashion as the Salmon River of No Return joins forces with the mightier Snake River at the lower end of Hells Canyon—the deepest canyon in North America. This dramatic confluence is a sight to behold, marking the meeting of two iconic Northwest rivers.

After savoring a final riverside lunch and capturing a few group photos, you’ll board a custom jet boat for an exhilarating ride up the Snake River through Hells Canyon. The river here carries twice the flow of the Salmon, creating powerful waves and stunning scenery as Oregon and Idaho rise steeply on either side of the canyon.

It’s the perfect way to end your adventure—thrilling, scenic, and full of stories you’ll be sharing long after you’re home. From the take-out at Pittsburg Landing, you’ll travel over the mountains back to the Salmon River and return to Riggins, completing your journey through one of Idaho’s most breathtaking landscapes.

From playful rapids and quiet canyon mornings to star-filled nights and the thrilling jet boat finale through Hells Canyon, a Lower Salmon River rafting trip with Mountain River Outfitters captures the very best of Idaho adventure.
