Itinerary

Your Main Salmon River adventure with Mountain River Outfitters (MRO) starts with excitement from the very first moment. Depending on your trip, you’ll either enjoy a thrilling jet boat ride deep into Idaho’s wilderness or take a scenic charter flight from McCall to Salmon, Idaho—an unforgettable way to see the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness from above.

Upon arrival at the Corn Creek launch site, your guides will give a riverside orientation and get everyone ready to hit the water. You’ll launch early enough to raft several miles before lunch, diving right into the adventure with a series of iconic rapids—Killum, Alder, Rainier, and Devil’s Teeth—that will get your adrenaline flowing and set the tone for the days ahead.

The river quickly reveals why it’s considered Idaho’s premier rafting destination, offering both exhilarating whitewater and moments of quiet beauty. As you float downstream, the canyon walls rise higher, the forest deepens, and the sense of wilderness adventure truly begins.

Wake up to the sound of the river and a hearty riverside breakfast before another full day of adventure on the Main Salmon River. On Day 2, your journey continues deeper into the wilderness with a mix of thrilling whitewater and time to unwind in Idaho’s natural beauty. You’ll take on Black Canyon Rapid, one of the most scenic stretches of the river, before stopping at Barth Hot Springs—a crystal-clear natural pool tucked against the canyon wall and one of the most beloved stops on any Idaho river trip.

Keep your eyes peeled for bighorn sheep scaling the granite cliffs or eagles soaring overhead. Between rapids, you might fish for cutthroat or rainbow trout, explore the serene beauty of Sabe Creek, or simply relax on the riverbank, soaking in the sunshine and the peace of the wilderness. Evenings bring the comfort of camp—great food, laughter around the fire, and unforgettable star-filled skies.

Day 3 delivers the highest concentration of whitewater on your trip as the canyon deepens and the adventure builds. This mile-deep stretch includes a thrilling sequence of rapids—Hida Creek (New Rapid), Bailey, Sap Creek (New Rapid), Five Mile, Split Rock, Big Mallard, Elk Horn, and Growler—each offering waves and excitement that will keep your paddle crew smiling all day long.

Between rapids, you’ll step back in time with visits to Campbell’s Ferry and Jim Moore’s homestead, both showcasing remarkable examples of pioneer cabins and the legendary backcountry characters who helped shape this historic canyon.

These days on the Main Salmon blend adventure, history, and natural beauty in a way few places on earth can match. Once you experience its magic, you’ll understand why guests return again and again to the River of No Return—a place that captures your heart and stays with you long after the journey ends.

Deep in the heart of the Idaho wilderness, far from roads and crowds, lies China Bar Lodge—a hidden gem along the Main Salmon River and a highlight of your Mountain River Outfitters adventure. While the lodge is open to other guests, MRO is the only river outfitter that stays here, giving our guests a truly unique and exclusive wilderness experience.

After several days on the river, you’ll arrive at China Bar, where a warm welcome, a hot shower, and a cold drink await. Enjoy a delicious lunch on the deck overlooking the Salmon River at the mouth of Lemhi Creek, taking in views that few people ever experience.

Guests on our 5- and 6-day trips spend the night here, enjoying the comforts of cozy guest cabins with comfortable beds and indoor plumbing—a true treat after days of camping along the river. Your guides and lodge staff prepare a fabulous dinner in the rustic dining hall, where laughter, storytelling, and the sounds of the river create an unforgettable evening.

There’s no better way to experience the Idaho wilderness—combining the serenity of a remote river canyon with the comfort of lodge living, surrounded by breathtaking scenery and warm hospitality.

The adventure continues as you journey deeper through the Main Salmon River Canyon, where every bend reveals something new. These days are filled with stunning scenery, clear tributaries, and memorable rapids. You’ll pass the crystal-clear confluence of the South Fork of the Salmon River, where turquoise waters meet in a spectacular display. The river’s character changes here—its volume grows, and so does the excitement.

Enjoy a mix of fun, splashy rapids such as LudwigDried Meat, and more, each offering their own thrills and incredible canyon views. Along the way, you’ll stop to explore Buckskin Bill’s historic homestead at Five Mile Bar, home of the famous “last of the mountain men.” Here, you’ll step into a piece of Idaho legend, learning about Buckskin Bill’s incredible self-sufficient life deep in the wilderness.

As you float farther downstream, the lush forest transitions to steep granite walls, framing the river in dramatic beauty. Expansive white sand beaches invite playtime and relaxation—perfect spots for swimming, sunbathing, or even a friendly game of beach volleyball. Evenings are for savoring another gourmet camp dinner, trading stories, and soaking in the serenity of your final nights on the river.

Your final day brings a spectacular finale, featuring some of the largest and most exciting whitewater on the trip—ChittamCarey Falls, and Vinegar Creek Rapids—each a thrilling celebration of all you’ve experienced. After a final riverside lunch, you’ll take a scenic 22-mile shuttle back to Riggins, Idaho, retracing your journey through the canyon in a whole new way.

With its perfect balance of adventure, history, and relaxation, the final stretch of the Main Salmon River is the ideal ending to an unforgettable Idaho rafting experience—one that stays with you long after you’ve returned home.
