Owyhee River Raft Trip

Owyhee River | Canyonlands Wilderness

4 or 5 Days

April through Early May

4–5 Day “Canyonlands”
Wilderness Rafting Expedition

The Owyhee River flows through one of the most spectacular and least-visited canyon landscapes in the West. Lava flows, towering sandstone walls, granite cliffs, wildflower-filled slopes, and geothermal hot springs create a setting that feels ancient and untouched.

This spring-only expedition through the Lower Owyhee Canyonlands Wilderness offers exciting whitewater, dramatic geology, and rare solitude. It is not uncommon to see only one or two other groups on the entire trip.

Due to a short window of raftable flows on the Owyhee, this Owyhee Canyonlands adventure is typically only available as an early-season rafting escape in April and May when water levels are at their peak

What to Expect

The Owyhee delivers a lively, fun-paced whitewater experience through narrow desert canyons that rise more than 1,500 feet above the river.

Expect:

  • Class III–IV rapids
  • Remote sand beach camps
  • Scenic hikes into side canyons
  • Multiple natural hot springs
  • Abundant wildflowers in bloom

This trip is ideal for adventurous spirits and families with children 12 years and older.

Who This Trip Is For

  • Adventurous travelers seeking remote wilderness
  • Guests who have rafted before and want something different
  • Families with older kids (12+)
  • Photographers and bird watchers
  • Small groups looking for true solitude

The Owyhee is not a mainstream river. It is a rare experience for those who want something extraordinary.

A Landscape Unlike Anywhere Else

The high desert terrain feels like stepping into the old West. Sedimentary canyon walls glow in changing light. Lupine and Indian Paintbrush line the banks. Prairie falcons and golden eagles soar overhead. Bighorn sheep and pronghorn antelope move across rocky slopes.

Every bend reveals geology millions of years in the making.

River Dining in the Canyonlands

Out here, meals are more than fuel for the day. They are part of the experience. After miles of whitewater and desert hiking, you’ll return to camp to the aroma of dinner drifting through the canyon air. Our guides prepare hearty, thoughtfully crafted meals in a full riverside kitchen, using fresh ingredients and accommodating dietary needs whenever possible.

Mornings begin with hot coffee, tea, and a satisfying breakfast before launching back into the canyon. Lunches are served along the river, and evenings feature generous dinners, appetizers, and Dutch oven desserts enjoyed under wide desert skies. In a place this remote, the comfort of great food tastes even better.
