The Salmon River

The River of No Return

The Salmon River is one of the longest free flowing rivers in the continental United States. It carves through deep wilderness canyons, spills over lively Class III and IV rapids, and opens onto wide beaches perfect for swimming and riverside evenings.

Main Salmon River

Often considered a true bucket list adventure, the Main Salmon blends exciting whitewater with long scenic floats through protected wilderness. Days are filled with iconic rapids, wildlife sightings, fishing opportunities, and time to relax on warm sandbars.

Evenings bring chef prepared meals, campfires, and star filled skies in one of the most pristine river corridors in the country.

Lower Salmon River

The Lower Salmon is warmer, more open, and perfect for families and groups. It offers consistent whitewater, expansive beaches, and a slightly more accessible feel while still delivering incredible scenery and fun.

Riggins Area -
Vinegar Creek to Lucile

This stretch of the Salmon River near Riggins delivers exciting whitewater in a shorter, action-packed format. Fun rapids, warm summer water, and beautiful canyon scenery make it perfect for half-day and full-day trips.

It is a great introduction to whitewater rafting and a favorite for families, first-timers, and anyone looking for a quick adventure on the river.

Mountain River Outfitters operates under a special use permit with the Salmon-Challis National Forest for Main Salmon River (SA-6) float boating. MRO also operates under several BLM special use permits for Nez Perce National Forest, BLM Lower Salmon River Cottonwood Field Office and Owyhee River (SA7A, SA7B, SA7C, SA8). Mountain River Outfitters is insured, licensed and bonded outfitters by the State of Idaho’s IOGLB and are equal opportunity recreation service providers and employers.
